The argument for long-term thinking goes something like this: 1. There are X people alive today. 2. In the future, there will be Y≫X people alive. 3. All people have equal moral weight. 4. Therefore the state of the world in the future is more important than the state of the world today.
On a more basic level, I worry that the smartest, most competent humans are becoming more and more terrified of the social/environmental consequences of having children. Meanwhile their most mentally-ill (and often fundamentalist religious) peers are proudly and intentionally procreating like they always did in the past. How do we prepare for that kind of future shit show? Scary🤫
