Do we know if the gorillas behave differently in the wild when they have territory/food/mates to protect?

Possibly the low frequencies of the sound resonate on the wall behind you at a low enough level that you don't consciously "hear" them but your body/brain does and this allows you to locate the sound? Another possibility would be that your "higher" brain is overriding your "lower" brain and it has learned that sound comes through windows?

I'm really not sure regarding the gorillas.

Regarding the sounds, it looks like the correct answer is pretty close to your first possibility: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precedence_effect

Basically, if you hear the same sound with a delay from two different directions, you will perceive it as coming from the direction of whichever arrived first, even if that's quieter. (I guess this is an adaptation we have precisely to deal with exactly the kind of situation I described!)

For the conversational pattern, question lacking context?

my response to the last thing will come off as a personal rant, but it's subjectively similar to some of my experience with my parents/adults, and I have filed it as evidence of "people who seem to only have 1 piece of memory at a time". shrug

You've written quite a bit about using air purifiers for cleaning particulates out of indoor air. What about the MERV filters in the HVAC systems? Seems like they would also be helpful for improving indoor air quality, especially the MERV 12 or MERV 13 ones. But you haven't said anything much about them. Are they dramatically worse than the air purifiers in cleaning particulates out of the air?

I think MERV filters in HVAC systems are great! I haven't looked into them *too* much, so I don't think I can give a detailed summary of the tradeoffs versus a freestanding air purifier. But broadly speaking, I think they're probably a good idea for most people who have a HVAC system, during whatever part of the year they're running it.

(My #1 piece of advice regarding air quality is to get a particle counter. As long as particles are low, you're good!)
