Love the analysis. The Diet Coke story in Tyler Cowen Talent book also took me down a path… I think the correlation is likely all the caffeine (albeit I’m not basing this off as rigorous an analysis). If you’re having 12 diet cokes a day (totally doable) then you’re likely just very wired… Diet Coke is also a great caffeine delivery mechanism that can be consumed all day and night… wrote some more thoughts here: https://mysticalsilicon.substack.com/p/humans-caffeine-magic?s=w
I guess you could design a study that swapped the Diet Coke for caffeine free Diet Coke (if it's the same formulation other than the caffeine) and see if there was any difference.
Huh. I missed this whole controversy. But it might explain why I'm not ambitious, successful, competitive, or rich, despite having consumed enough Diet Coke to fill Lake Michigan.
I don't think your link at "extremely controversial" is working as intended.
How weird-I have the right DOI, but I think the journal has misconfigured it or something. This is the intended paper, I'll replace the link, thanks!

Great post by the way! Got me to subscribe.
